The coils we usually mount on the modern bikes are the following:
Our part number: 307165000010 ; Magneti Marelli coils - cost is EUR 103 each (As of July '03).
When fitting those you do not need to change the timing, or anything else. The solution we use is " plug-and-play". So the cables fit in the original wiring harness. As far known issues, we can be short... there have been none so far.
